UniCredit Bank
The Bank's art collection is the first corporate collection of works of painting, sculpture and graphic art by Russian artists in the 1920s-1930s. The collection was started in 1993. The impetus to form this collection came from the Bank's desire to take part in cultural programs that are relevant to contemporary society. The main reasons for why this particular era was selected to form the basis of the collection are as follows: - Throughout the entire 20th century, the artwork of the 1920s and 1930s has remained a sort of terra incognita, left behind in the shadow of the avant-garde movement but rich with many little-known yet important facts relevant to the history of culture; - And, these works of art comprise a phenomenon full of dramatic content. The names and biographies of many of these artists, who played a primary role in Russian culture, were for many decades simply excised from the history books. The importance of their work became clear and evident only at the end of the 20th century. The Bank sees its task as being to bring these artists' work back into everyday life. - The art of tht 1920s and 1930s served as the platform for an independent, alternative culture In Russia. Its democratic direction and humanistic potential are seen to have particular value at the turnof the 21th century. In spite of the collection's modest format, the works have attracted the attention and praise of many specialists in art. We are proud to present the works of Alexander Drevin which were produced in the latter stage of his artistic career. The landscapes of his Armenian cycle are emotionally charged, dynamically composed, and demonstrate Drevin's strong-willed painting style. Nadezhda Udaltsova's Still Life with Hunter's Bag and Rifle holds a special place in the collection, and has a counterpart in the State Tretyakov Gallery. Alexander Labas's beautiful landscapes of the Black Sea shore made in mid-1930s impart his characteristic vision of wide open spaces that always remain part of the infinite cosmos. Daniil Cherkes's Woman for All Times is the final version of his Woman in Mask, one of the artist's most important works, which is now in the Museum of Visual Arts in the city of Nukus. Leonid Chupyatov's Dream, Leonid Zusman's cityscapes of Leningrad, and Lev Zhegin's Still Life with a Lemon represent various movements in 20th century Russian painting, and together with the other works in the Bank's collection, help one get a fair overall impression of Russian art in the first half of the 20th century. The logic behind art of the 1920s and 1930s was to maintain an open dialogue with both past and future trends in art. In keeping with this logic, the Bank continues to expand its art collection with works of the post-avant-garde movement and later ones - from the forties, fifties and sixties - which resonate with their own era, yet at the same time possess characteristics that tie them closely to the highest professional and moral apexes of the early 20th century culture. The 20th century art is today seen as a meditation on time, culture and society, a reflection on what art was able to accomplish and become in a new, rapidly changing world. Russian art has enriched the world with its experience of moral responsibility and the absolute value of man's inner freedom.
