The graphic arts series that V. A. Koroteev created in the Paveletsky Market enables us to observe the change to his style that takes place when he is depicting an enclosed space: in this case a city market. Sometimes the artist sees it from a slightly elevated point of view. This leads to a slight tendency towards foreshortening, which underlines the distinctness and a certain grotesqueness of the human body: the city bears down on the artist in the form of the market crowds, but, like an ocean wave, it does not reach him. One gets the impression that his characters emerge from a compact, congested environment and are parts of a single organism that have fallen from or been projected outward by this united whole. Through the detailed characterization of individuals we see the place that unites them, the market; it identifies a certain conventionality in their presence, through which beats a living and unconditional humanity.
