The best works by Alexander Labas, whose 110^th anniversary was celebrated in 2010, are fully in line with the well-known rules of art stating that an artist who can incorporate into his work his personal experience, his  perception and comprehension of a flashing instant of his present life overcomes history as some trifle, transcends the depiction of a certain period of history and remains forever genuine and modern. There are works of art that never grow old and this is true of Labas. When he tells us about the life around him, it seems as if he’s talking here and now, he shares his perception of the world and it feels like it is part of our reality. His best works are dramatically modern and it’s hard to believe that these watercolours were painted 80 or even 90 years ago.
